The greatest industrial disaster of the 21st century has been mired in silence…
On May 29, 2006, the Indonesian oil and gas company Lapindo Brantas triggered the eruption of an enormous mud volcano in Sidoarjo, East Java
when drilling deep underground for a gas exploration project.
Two years later, Fourteen people have died. 50,000 have had to relocate, with more every day as the mud spreads.
Twelve villages have been destroyed. Thousands of people remain homeless.
Schools, offices, factories and much of Sidoarjo’s infrastructure has been wiped out.
The impact of toxic gases, rising mud levels, and sinking of the earth on the over ten million people living just hours away is incalculable.
So is the impact on the environment.
Lapindo Brantas is owned by the family of Indonesia’s richest man and national welfare minister, billionaire Aburizal Bakrie.
The exploration project was funded in part by the firms Credit Suisse, Barclays, Fortis Group, and Merrill Lynch.
The Australian oil company Santos had an 18 per cent stake.

21世紀最大の工業災害が沈黙の闇に沈みそうになっています。
2006年5月29日に東ジャワ州シドアルジョ市にてガス探査のための地下掘削の際に、ラピンド・ブランタス（Lapindo Brantas）という石油会社が事故を起こし、巨大な泥火山を噴出させました。
事故後2年間に14人が死亡、現在も5万人が避難中、そして噴出量が増加するにつれ被害者も増え続けています。
12もの村が泥の湖の下に埋まり人が住めなくなっていますし何千人もの市民が家を失っています。
学校や工場・鉄道などの多くのインフラは破壊されています。
1千万人以上が住むスラバヤ市の南25キロにあるシドアルジョ。
そこからくる毒ガス、増加する泥噴出、または地盤沈下などは誰もが計算できない影響を今後及ぼすに違いありません。
同様に、私たちの住む地球への影響も巨大なはずです。
ラピンド・ブランタス社はインドネシア1番の金持ちで億万長者であるバクリー・アブリザル公共福祉担当相の一族の関連会社です。
シドアルジョでのガス探査のためにクレディ・スイス信託銀行、バークレーズ銀行、メリル・リンチ・グループなどの大企業が出資していました。
またオーストラリアの大手石油・ガス探鉱開発会社、サントス社がラピンド・ブランタス社の株を18%保有していました。
